FAQs
- What is a Christian Science practitioner?
This is someone who helps others through prayer. The person may need to be healed of an illness, an addiction, a relationship, job loss, a situation, etc. If you would like to read about healings that have been accomplished through prayer please go to http://www.spirituality.com/. They have a large collection of articles written by students of Christian Science who have been healed through prayer covering various subjects. The healings were verified before they were published.
- Who first demonstrated the power to heal through prayer?
Christ Jesus. In the Bible, the New Testament is full of healings accomplished by him.
- Does Christian Science teach that Jesus was God?
No. But we do learn from the Bible that Jesus was the Son of God. “We acknowledge and adore one supreme and infinite God. We acknowledge His son, one Christ; the Holy Ghost or divine Comforter; and man in God’s image and likeness.” This is Tenet #2, taken from the textbook of Christian Science, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy (we also use the Holy Bible to study Christian Science). You can read all the Tenets on page 497 in Science and Health.
- Who was the founder of Christian Science?
The discoverer and founder of our church was Mary Baker Eddy. She wrote the book, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures to help all of us understand our spiritual relationship to God. Students of Christian
Science study the Bible and Science and Health regularly in order to be healed of various types of problems confronting them and to learn more about our spiritual relationship to God.
Here’s how Mrs. Eddy discovered Christian Science: one day in February of 1866, Mrs. Eddy slipped and fell on the ice while she was going to a meeting. A doctor was called to treat her because she had sustained some very serious injuries from her fall and was not expected to recover. She asked for her Bible and she opened it to Matthew 9 to read the healing of the palsied man. As she read, she was completely healed of her injuries, much to the surprise and delight of her friends and relatives gathered in her home at the time.
She spent the next 3 years of her life studying the Bible in order to understand the principle by which she had been healed. She eventually wrote her textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, which explains the principle behind her discovery.
Christian Science is based on the Ten Commandments as found in the Book of Exodus and the Sermon on the Mount as found in the Book of Matthew.
- What is the basis for prayer?
The first chapter of Genesis talks about God making man spiritual in his image and likeness. Prayer that is effective acknowledges man as spiritual not material. Our view of man comes from the lines in the Bible, Genesis 1: 27, “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.”
- While praying for others or ourselves, can we work with God and material medicine equally in order to have a healing?
Christian Science teaches us to rely solely on God. Let me quote what Mrs. Eddy says about this subject from Science and Health 167: 22-31:
“It is not wise to take a halting and half-way position or to expect to work equally with Spirit and matter, Truth and error. There is but one way – namely, God and His idea – which leads to spiritual being. The scientific government of the body must be attained through the divine Mind. It is impossible to gain control over the body in any other way. On this fundamental point, timid conservatism is absolutely inadmissible. Only through radical reliance on Truth can scientific healing power be realized.”
- What makes Christian Science a science?
“Christian Science, understood, coincides with the Scriptures, and sustains logically and demonstratively every point it presents. Otherwise it would not be Science, and could not present its proofs.” This is from Science and Health page 358: 9-13.
- Do I need to be a member of your church before I ask for treatment?
No. Membership in our church is not necessary in order to have prayerful treatment. The person being treated through prayer does not need to be present with the practitioner at that time. Absent treatment is as effective now as it was in Jesus’ time.
Prayer for individuals is given on a case-by-case basis. Not one prayerful treatment is ever the same as another.
Also, you should be aware that when you ask a practitioner to pray with you for an illness, you will need to stop taking whatever medication you’ve been using for that problem. As stated above, it is not possible to mix Christian Science and medication to heal a problem.
When we pray for someone using Christian Science we do not use psychology, hypnotism, positive thinking, pie in the sky, mind over matter, or animal magnetism. For a fuller understanding of prayer and how healing is accomplished in Christian Science, please refer to the chapter on Prayer in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.
